Spring 2009 Class Schedule Opening Exercises is from 9:30-9:40
Course Descriptions American Courts 2: Art History: Boys Choir: Chemistry: This time in Chemistry we will explore energy in its many sources. We will examine electricity and batteries in chemistry, the chemistry of nutrition, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, solar energy and heat. Color My World: We will be helping the kids do arts and crafts and maybe a story and/or song that goes with each week's theme. Engineering Projects: Through hands-on projects, learn to understand how the world works - how buildings stand up, how machines move, and how people make and use technology. Girls Choir: Just So Stories: I am so excited about this class! We will be having a fabulous time reading/talking about Rudyard Kipling "Just So Stories" then making and illustrating our own stories. Each student will need to bring a 3 ring binder with page protectors for their own Just so story. (Note: It would be awesome if the binder has a clear pocket in the front so they can put a "cover" on their book) Knights and Medieval Times: Start as a page and become a knight (girls too). We will be studying this time period in a hands on approach. All for fun and fun for all. Maps: We will learn how to read different kinds of maps (simple maps, road maps, atlas, etc.), make maps, plan a vacation, go on a treasure hunt, and other fun activities. Movies: We will be making your own 3-minute movie and limited to 10 people. We will each make our own movie and then compile them into a disk. You do not need your own equipment; we will film in class. Each class member will be given a nursery rhyme or fairy tale to use as their script (or choose one of your own). Then they get to storyboard, brainstorm and flesh out the details. . . will it be puppets, photos, actors, clay? Will it have music, special effects, etc.? You are limited to 3 minutes. We will be discussing these items in class and helping each other get ready to film. Gather your supplies and be ready to film in class. You may even get to spend some time editing your own movie outside of class. Reading and Eating: We will be reading some favorite stories and enjoying treats that compliment the story. There will be a little bit of reading, a little bit of cooking, and a whole lot of fun. There is a $4 cost for this class. I think I will need to limit this class to 8. Solar System: Springing Into State Science: I am planning to do a Washington state based science unit, and I'll do some environmental education, plants and animals around the state, and an Earth Day focus for one or two weeks, since that's in late April. Weapons and Their History: In this class we will be making a variety of weapons (I'm not sure yet but these are my ideas) such as blow guns, sling shot, crossbows, bolas, spears and catapults. We will be talking about their history and then have contests to see who is the best shot with using them. I promise that I will keep it safe. The kids will probably have to provide some of the things for the weapons on their own, such as a Y-shaped stick for the sling shot and probably a straight stick for their spears. The World of Little House: I will teach "The World of Little House" based on the Laura Ingalls Wilder stories. I would like to limit this to 8 students also. We will learn some history and geography as well as make some crafts and make a family tree. World War 2: |
