Spring 2008 Class Schedule Opening Exercises is from 9:30-9:40
Course Descriptions American Girls: Based on the "Addy: an American Girl" series, we will do crafts and cooking that girls would have done during the American Civil War times. Arts and Crafts- "Look what I made" We will be making several simple arts and crafts for the season and coming holidays. Cut, glue, color, paint... It won't be too messy, but it will be loads of fun! $1 donation appreciated, but not required. The Civil War: An overview of the reasons for the war, the battles, the important leaders and events. A little more detail for the older kids. We will do some simple crafts and games that relate to the topics. Continents: The Dangerous Book for Boys: Earth's Animals: We will discover animals from different parts of the world, learn some interesting facts about where these animals live, and create our own atlas's to take home. Knights and Princesses (in training): Games, Prizes, and Food! Can you imagine a better way to learn some manners? Impress your friends, please your parents, and stun your grandparents with what you learn in this class! Start as a squire and end as a knight. Start as a lady in waiting and end up a princess. Musical Theater: We will be creating a compilation show using group and solo musical numbers. Students should be prepared to sing (solos and group numbers), dance, develop characters and write dialogue. This will be the first half of a two-term class, and students must commit to taking this class both terms. Maximum of 12 students. Myths and Legends: Come learn about amazing men and women and their stories throughout the history of mankind. We will be exploring the beliefs of people from ancient civilizations throughout the world. We may act some of these out in class. Nursery Rhymes: Come have some fun. We'll sing, dance, play and craft our way through the rhymes of Mother Goose. In the end we will perform a play of nursery rhymes for everyone. Quilting: Rhythm and Rhyme: We will be learning and doing lots of different activities, all with movement, song, poetry, etc. Science With the Magic School Bus: Science Experiments: Do you know who invented the light bulb? Do you know how the law of gravity was discovered? Do you know what penicillin is and how it was accidentally discovered? We will uncover the answers to these questions through investigation of famous Scientists. We will also perform easy and incredible experiments that were related to some of their specific interests. A $3.00 materials fee will be required for each child. A notebook for recording observations is also recommended. {This can be as simple as a three ring binder with writing paper or as elaborate as a prebound writing journal}. Sculpting: Short Stories: Do you like to read? Would you like to see how an author can create characters and stories in only a few pages? We will be reading short stories by great authors and trying our hand at writing a short story as well. Teach It: Would you like to teach a class on your favorite subject? In this class, you will learn how to teach, and actually get to be the teacher part of the time, teaching your classmates something you love. The Viking World: We will be talking about the timeline, geography, government, mythology, home life, weapons and long ships of the Viking world. Washington State History: Washington State History is beginning overview of the topic. We will learn geography of the state, history of the native people, about early explorers in the region, and early settlements & pioneers in Washington. We will likely make it to 1900 during the winter session. If there is interest, we can continue through the 20th century during the spring—it all depends on how much depth students & parents want. Good writing (5th grade level) and reading skills are necessary for this class.
